Der zerklüftet’, schwarze Boden
Ist verkohlet und verglaset;
Über diesem Haufen Schutte
Hat ein Wirbelwind geraset.
In den Trümmern eines Dorfes
Da betrat ich Hausruinen,
Wo ich einen Mann erschaue;
Sonst ist niemand mir erschienen.
„Ach, wo bin ich?“ war mein Erstes.
„Tausend Meilen wohl vom Orte,
Wo du nach dem Leibe wohnest“,
Waren des Gefragten Worte.
„Welches Unglück?“ fragt‘ ich weiter,
„Ist in diesem Land geschehen?“
„Ach, so hast du“, war die Antwort,
„Nicht das Schreckliche gesehen?“
Alle Städte und Fabriken,
Die einst blühten, sind verödet;
Die darinnen sich genähret,
Sind zerstreuet und getötet.
Viele kämpfen ihren Tod’skampf
Mit verzerrtem Blick und Leibe,
Rollen in des Schmerzes Zucken
Ihren Körper gleich der Scheibe.
Schaurig rasseln durch die Straßen
Unablässig schwarze Karren,
Und man wirft hinab die Leichen
Ehe sie noch ganz erstarren.
Und bei fernen Leichenzügen
Singen dumpf die Grabgefährten:
Soll der Tod doch mir genügen
Und ich höre: Das soll werden!
Ganz Europa war ein Lager
Von dem größten Kriegesheere;
Und es sammeln sich die Scharen
Gleich dem Sande an dem Meere.
